Alternatives to popular allergy-inducing candies this Halloween

This Halloween, parents of children with food allergies are finding more candy alternatives than ever before.

While some parents are opting for nut-free treat choices, others are going with candy-free options instead. Toys and non-food treats are popping up at allergy-friendly events nationwide.

Trick or Treasure

One such event, organized nationally by many FARE members, is called Trick or Treasure. This is an all-inclusive trick-or-treat event that anyone can participate in. A Trick or Treasure event in Clawson, Calif., has taken place for the past three years. This event focuses on peanut allergies, screening all candy and foods at the event and participating homes for peanuts and tree nuts.

Other events are more selective about their allergy allowances, accounting for eggs, milk and other common food allergies. They often take treats out of the equation completely and instead give out toys, party favors and coupons to local businesses.

Whatever your child’s allergy may be, there is likely a nearby allergy-friendly event for the whole family to enjoy.
