Experts Say Many on Gluten-Free Diets May Not Need to Avoid Gluten

Gluten-free diets are a way to avoid the symptoms of gluten sensitivities or Celiac disease. However, new research suggests that many people who have stopped eating gluten may not have a medical reason for their gluten-free diet.MSN Healthsays that experts suggest that many people avoiding wheat, barley, rye, and other sources of gluten may not really need to do so.

Italian researchers found that medical literature on gluten sensitivities are far outweighed by the number of times gluten sensitivities are mentioned on websites and in popular literature. Dr. Joseph Levy, who directs the pediatric gastroenterology division of New York University’s Langone Medical Center, explains “ We see a lot of suspicion that gluten reactions are responsible for numerous health problems, and it’s difficult to counter this belief. There are a lot of alternative practitioners out there that blame gluten for everything, even though there’s not a lot of science behind it.”

An article about this phenomenon was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. In the publication, a team of Italian researchers describe gluten as a ‘new diet villain.’ Marketing research finds that as many as 15 to 25 percent of consumers seek out gluten-free foods, though no official figures suggest that the number of people with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease has reached this level.

Digestive expert Dr. David Greenwald pointed out that even when there isn’t a clinical reason to suspect gluten sensitivities, there is little downside to following a gluten-free diet. “If people are uncomfortable and want to put themselves on a gluten-free diet and they don’t mind it, there’s no real harm to that if they’re willing to bear the inconvenience and cost,” he said.
