The Maryland General Assembly is considering a bill that would raise food allergy awareness.

The law would require restaurants to ask customers about known food allergies before serving and would allow counties to require that restaurants have at least one trained employee on premises to respond to food allergies.

Bill faces resistance, awaits House approval

Maryland has approximately 300,000 residents with food allergies, many of whom have severe allergies to common foods like nuts and eggs.

The bill is facing some resistance, initially resulting in the removal of a mandate for restaurants and instead allow counties to make the decision instead (as listed above). Some argue that many restaurants are already taking steps similar to those in the bill and doing so voluntarily, making the bill moot.

The bill is currently before the Maryland House, having passed through the state’s Senate.
