Party City Removes Super Bowl Ad And Apologizes for Offending Those With Allergies

Party City and Food Network star Sunny Anderson have apologized for an insensitive and crass commercial that was aired as a lead-up to the Super Bowl. The ad, which features two women at a huge game day snack table, was insensitive to those with celiac or gluten allergies.

The ad was for Sunny Anderson’s inflatable snack stadium, featured prominently, but Food Network and Party City say that Anderson had no part in the commercial.

People who are gluten-free are “gross,” said the ad.

The ad featured the large snack table and next to it, a small stool with a tiny tray of food on it. The two women in the commercial are talking and one asks what the food on the stool is for.

“Those are some gluten-free options,” the other says.

“Do we even know people that are like that?” the other asks.

“Tina,” is the response followed by “Oh, gross, ya.”

Party City issued an apology shortly after the ad aired on YouTube and pulled the ad from YouTube quickly. The apology was then shared by actor Sunny Anderson on her Instagram account. The apology reads:

“Party City values its customers above all else and we take your feedback extremely seriously. We recognize that we made an error in judgement by running the recent Big Game commercial, which was insensitive to people with food allergies. We have removed the commercial from our website and all other channels, and sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused. We’d also like to clarify that Sunny Anderson was not involved in the creation of this commercial in any way, and we apologize for any offense it has caused with her audience and fans. We will also be reviewing our internal vetting process on all advertising content to avoid any future issues. In addition, Party City will be making a donation in support of Celiac Disease research.”
