The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EEACI) held its fourth annual Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Meeting (FAAM) on October 13-15. Over 1,200 experts from around the globe were in attendance to learn the latest in food allergy research and prevention.

Most of those in attendance were healthcare professionals and researchers. More than 17 million people suffer from food allergies in Europe and about 3.5 million of those are under age 25, says the EEACI. About 8 percent of those people who have food allergies can have a severe reaction that could result in death.

New FAAM guidelines presented.

FAAM presented its newly-updated Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Guidelines at the conference, focusing on primary care physicians. The premier European association for primary car physicians was well-represented at the conference. The new guidelines give primary car physicians an illustrated procedure for implementation of food allergy testing and diagnosis as well as how to react to an anaphylactic emergency.

“General practitioners are at the forefront of diagnosing and treating patients, and only by strengthening collaboration with these practitioners will we be able to ensure an improved earlier identification and treatment of patients suffering from food allergies and anaphylaxis,” said Professor Muraro, President of EAACI and Chair of FAAM 2016.

Also discussed during the conference were current European Union regulations for food allergy and new legislation that’s being introduced or pending. Especially in regards to food labeling.

Finally, new updates on research and developments in food allergy prevention, diagnosis, and treatment were also given by researchers and biotechnology companies in attendance.
