Academia Sinica, the most prestigious of Taiwan’s research institutions, has called for mandatory labeling of allergy-causing foods in that country.
The proposal from Academia focuses on food safety and notes that the issue has been largely ignored in Taiwan, where somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of the population has allergic reactions of some type, many of which are food-based.
The large-scale industrialization that has been happening in Taiwan in recent years, the institution says, has been followed by an increase of rhinitis, dermatitis and asthma. Academia Sinica also noted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s call with their Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act in 2004. The current U.S. regulations for allergen labeling were further strengthened in 2009.
Taiwan has almost no regulation in this regard, says Academia Sinica, and should follow suit.
