Though some doctors do recommend that pregnant women avoid eating common allergens like peanuts while they are pregnant, most have long recommended that pregnant women eat what they want, because diet will not influence whether their child develops food allergies.
The new study suggests that rather than avoiding certain allergens, pregnant women should eat certain foods that could influence their child’s immune system development, making it stronger and less likely to be affected by food allergens. One suggestion, in fact is to eat nuts, along with oily fish. Packed with omega-3s, which have been shown to better develop an infant’s digestive system, enabling the body to create antibodies, which lead to a stronger immune system.
The authors of the study suggest that food allergies may be on the rise because pregnant women have been avoiding nuts and fish during pregnancy over concerns about mercury and nut allergies. If you are pregnant and want to reduce your baby’s chance of developing food allergies, it seems that stocking up on walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and salmon is a good idea.
