How the heck did Candied Popcorn and Peanuts Begin?
Two German immigrants living in Chicago might not have invented coating popped corn with something sweet, but they made it famous.
Frederick William Rueckheim and his brother Louis registered the F.W. Rueckheim & Bro. candy making business in the early 1870s. Their idea to cover popcorn with molasses was introduced at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. They called it “Candied Popcorn and Peanuts.”
Fair goers enjoyed the flavor of the gooey treat but apparently did not appreciate the stickiness on their fingers, so Louis started experimenting. He developed a dry, crisp, and sweet popcorn coating that became the secret of their success. In 1896 the brothers obtained the now familiar trademark for their finger-friendly caramel corn, Cracker Jack.
After developing moisture-proof packaging in 1899, Cracker Jack was mass produced and marketed around the globe, turning it into a national icon. When Jack Norworth penned his Take Me Out To The Ballgame lyrics in 1908, the Cracker Jack version of candied popcorn and peanuts was already part of American culture.
