Miley Cyrus Says Her Weight Loss Caused by Food Allergies

Miley Cyrus recently responded to rumors that her weight loss was caused by an eating disorder by explaining that she is following a gluten-free diet. On Sunday, she reportedly tweeted "For everyone calling me anorexic I have a gluten and lactose allergy. It's not about weight it's about health. Gluten is crapppp anyway!," according to the Los Angeles Times.

The latest celebrity to endorse gluten-free diets, she later tweeted "Everyone should try no gluten for a week! The change in your skin, physical and mental health is amazing! U won't go back!" Cyrus says she's feeling much better on a gluten-free diet that cuts out wheat and some other grains.

However, experts caution that not everyone should try it. Though gluten-free diets have become increasingly popular in recent years, the diet is only recommended for those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease, a condition involving an immune response to gluten that can cause pain and digestive symptoms and eventually lead to permanent intestinal damage. For such people, cutting out gluten is critical.

But for more other people, gluten-free diets should be considered a fad, says the Los Angeles Times. The paper reports “Opting for a gluten-free diet isn't necessarily any healthier than a diet with gluten, and products are sometimes costly. If gluten intolerance is not truly an issue, there may be no advantages to cutting out wheat and other foods, because some substitute grains contain little fiber." If you're experiencing symptoms you believe may be linked to gluten, they advise visiting your doctor for an evaluation before you start cutting foods out of your diet.
