Do I Have A Gluten Allergy?

Are you experiencing symptoms that lead you to believe you have a food allergy? If you have an upset stomach or feel nauseous after eating, or your skin breaks out in hives, or you begin wheezing and have difficulty breathing, the culprit may be a food allergy. Gluten allergy is an intolerance to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains.

Those who have a gluten allergy experience a range of symptoms after eating food with gluten, such as bread and other foods containing grains. The most common symptoms are gastrointestinal, including an upset stomach, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. Other symptoms affect the skin, including rashes or hives. Those with a gluten allergy may experience difficulty breathing, a runny or stuffy nose, and watery eyes after consuming gluten. Other symptoms have also been tied to this allergy, such as chronic fatigue. Individual symptoms can vary greatly, though most people with a gluten allergy experience at least some of the symptoms on this list.

If you think you are allergic to gluten, you may want to consider eliminating foods with gluten from your diet. If your symptoms subside, gluten was the likely culprit. However, the only sure way to know if you are allergic to gluten is to visit your doctor for an allergy test. If you think you may be allergic to gluten, you should also be tested for Celiac disease. Both conditions are brought on by consuming gluten and have similar symptoms. However, there are some key differences, so you should be tested so that you know which condition you have.
