The Teal Pumpkin Project has made teal the new orange for kids with food allergies.
Since 2014, the nationwide Teal Pumpkin Project has asked for people to offer non-food treat options for food allergic trick-or-treaters. Project participants place a teal pumpkin – an actual painted pumpkin, or a sign – by their front door indicating that non-food treats are available. By offering separate bowls of candy and non-food items, all trick-or-treaters can have a fun, safe Halloween experience.

This Halloween it’s easier than ever for people “go teal.” Many retail stores are now supporting the Teal Pumpkin Project through promotional efforts, and by offering Teal Pumpkin Project accessories.
CVS Pharmacy, Target, and Party City, for instance, are selling selections of official Teal Pumpkin items such as non-edible treats, window clings, and jack-o-lanterns. Other companies on the Teal Pumpkin Project bandwagon are Fun World, HyVee, Learning Express Toys, Market Street, Michaels, Mello Smello, Oriental Trading, Plutonium Paint, and The Switch Witch.
Teal Appeal
It’s also easy, fun, and rewarding for individuals and families to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project; for instance, you can:
- Enter the Pumpkin Contest. If you have fashioned an artistic, scary, gigantic, funny, or glittery teal pumpkin the FARE* ambassador and National Captain of Team Teal Pumpkin, Auggie Maturo, hopes you will enter your creation in the Teal Pumpkin Contest.
- Just upload a photo of your pumpkin to Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter using #TealPumpkinContest and @FoodAllergy. Judging is based on both creativity and number of likes. A link is provided below for contest Terms and Conditions.
- Color Your Neighborhood. To grow the Teal Pumpkin Project, consider sharing your personal allergy experiences with neighbors, giving them a project flyer (link below), and inviting them to join the Teal Pumpkin Project.
- You can also give your neighbors ideas for non-food treats that kids are thrilled to get, such as bookmarks, stickers, vampire fangs, spider rings, bubbles, markers, glow sticks, mini notepads, friendship bracelets, silly straws, balls, finger puppets, kazoos, crayons, necklaces, coins, and stencils.
- If your homeowner’s association, or building manager has a mailing list, ask them to include a paragraph about the Teal Pumpkin Project in their next newsletter, email, or other notice.
- Don’t forget to color your online neighborhood teal by sharing your #TealPumpkinProject knowledge, photos, and enthusiasm on your social media sites.
- Fundraise or Donate. Consider hosting a Teal Pumpkin Project fundraising event to benefit FARE’s community education and awareness programs. You might, for example, decorate teal-colored pumpkins to sell at farmer’s markets, or host a teal-themed game and crafts fundraising event in your neighborhood.

Small efforts made by many will ensure all kids have a safe Halloween—and come home with treats they can enjoy.
