Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes a buildup of cells on the skin surface, resulting in dry, red patches on the body and/or face. Having a psoriasis flare-up, particularly if it occurs on the face, can often leave people feeling embarrassed and isolated. However, with more than 8 million Americans diagnosed with the skin condition, it is safe to say you’re not alone. Thankfully, dermatologists and medical professionals can offer a range of medications and medical treatments that may help to alleviate symptoms of psoriasis and reduce the frequency of flare-ups.
Even big-time celebrities, such as reality star Kim Kardashian, are known to suffer from the skin condition. Although Kim mainly suffers from psoriasis on the face and lower body, you can have psoriasis breakouts anywhere, with many people finding psoriasis flare-ups on their scalp or hands.
Following yet another outbreak, Kim took to Twitter for suggestions from her followers, posting a selfie with her face covered in an herbal ointment.
“I think the time has come I start a medication for psoriasis,’ Kim remarked in a disgruntled Tweet. “I’ve never seen it like this before and I can’t even cover it at this point. It’s taken over my body. Has anyone tried a medication for psoriasis & what kind works best?”
Although Kim’s fan base was more than happy to make some suggestions, medical professionals have advised those suffering from psoriasis to seek dermatological advice rather than turning to social media. Doctors first raised these concerns following a study at the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. The study revealed that 10 percent of the advice for psoriasis treatment offered on YouTube could be “potentially dangerous.”
While psoriasis is currently considered incurable, a variety of natural and prescribed remedies can help ease the symptoms of the skin condition. Soaking in Epsom salts, liberally applying a thick moisturizer (such as Vaseline) to the affected skin, or increasing your intake of anti-inflammatory foods can all help to minimize psoriasis flare-ups and treat underlying symptoms.
Although most home remedies for psoriasis are harmless, don’t forget to consult your doctor or dermatologist before pursuing any treatment.
