Has anyone else had problems with Kashi oatmeal (vanilla heart to heart)? I have a call and an email into the manufacturer and am awaiting a response. I should note that my son also ate a Heshey kiss and a Nutrigrain bar during the same meal and I will also follow-up on those products. Anyhow, just wanted to get the word out about my son's reaction to Kashi and will post more once I hear from consumer rep.

Here is what happened:

My 3 and a half year old son is severely allergic to peanuts and tree-nuts. We had been using Kashi products for several months and felt comfortable with them

Sorry this happened to him and you!
I wouldn't place the blame on tree nuts or pn though in the Kashi oatmeal. I'm looking at my box, and there are some odd ingredients in there: tomato extract, grape seed extract, chicory root extract. I'm not sure those are in the other Kashi products. They put all sorts of "health food extracts" in the oatmeal...it may have been something new he is allergic to.
Please let us know what Kashi says...
take care,
Adrienne

You did excellent! I read your other post also. I hope when the first time comes I do as well as you did!
I would definitely follow-up on the nutrigrain and hershey's kiss as well. I know some of the kisses aren't safe- we eat the hershey's kisses also- do you mind if I ask which kind of kiss it was?
Hope he's feeling better now! I know that had to be so scary!

Here is a thread with some new and some old information:

According to the older information (which may or may not have changed but I don't remember reading any updates on it) the oatmeal is made in shared facilities with peanut/tree nut products. However, the newer information says that Kashi is less than helpful giving info regarding shared facilities now.

My aunt has reacted to Kashi cereals (she is fine with nuts/peanuts)---when I looked at the label, I wondered if it could have been buckwheat (which I'm allergic to as well.) Is buckwheat in the oatmeal by any chance?
It isn't so common an allergy here because people rarely eat buckwheat . . .but it is a major allergy in Japan (soba noodles have buckwheat).

Perhaps he has recently become allergic to sesame? It's a common food allergy for people who are also PA.

Ditto about the sesame- my dd is allergic to PN/TN, sesame and most other seeds! We avoid all seeds at this point!
Ask your allergist about sesame as it seems to be getting alot more attention these days!

I'm still wondering about the chicory root in the oatmeal. There are reported cases of an allergy to chicory root, and chicory root is related to a birch pollen allergy.
Just tossing that out as food for thought...
