We got our daughter the Baskin Robbins ice cream maker for Christmas. It comes with mixes, but you have to add half and half. I have an ice cream maker myself, and its recipie call for half and half, too. So I figured maybe the BR ice cream maker could use the same recipie as my ice cream maker. I tried it, and it was just as good as the mixes. So here is the recipie I used for vanilla ice cream in the BR ice cream maker:

1/2 cup whipping cream
1/2 cup half and half
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

I used this instead of the mix. You can break up your own (safe) cookie, or add your own (safe) chips to the ice cream. We added a Chips Ahoy cookie, yum!

I hope this helps, especially if you were thinking of getting your child a BR ice cream maker, but were reluctant because you were worried about its safety.
