Period. Nothing about *me* or *my approval*. No prying necessary.
And in case you're wondering, Mariah participates in the school lunch program. I don't read those ingredient labels either. The Director of Food Services is responsible for "label reading" for the lunch program too. And, yes, that's also "put into writing" in the 504.
Based on some of your jabs in this thread, MB (e.g. "the school you say you do" and "if that's the truth") you obviously doubt that what I am stating here is true. Sly guise that I am. So..... ***HERE'S A CHALLENGE FOR YOU MOMMABEAR*** You know the name of my school district. Call the board office and ask to speak to 'the administrator who oversees student accommdation plans'. Tell that administrator you have a child with PA and would like to know how it would be managed. Ask anything . . about label reading, and food in the classroom. Ask them about the lunch program. Confirm or disprove anything I've posted here for yourself, and then post your findings here.
Maybe you'll end up moving here instead of Naperville or wherever. . . LOL. (Though my previous offer to car pool your cubs is withdrawn since Mariah now rides the bus. Ah! Which reminds me, ask the board office about the district's transportation accommodations as well. I *so* should have ordered that book you mentioned express. It would come in handy right now.

Good point! When you call, don't forget to 'confirm' the school counselor's parent book clubs too.

I was correct in my "assumption".
edit to add: I didn't order it from the parent book club. I ordered it from Amazon.

Gail, I wasn't doubting what's in writing. I was just wondering if this was working the way your IHP did. What's in writing vs accepted practice. You know, the frosting, so to speak.
I can very well see trusting the hot lunch selections more than the occassional items brought in for various activities for approval. I'm taking it from what you posted regarding hot lunch......that Mariah received a hot lunch "calendar" menu just like everyone else, you were never contacted prior to that, and never got any other input regarding hot lunch "safety" during 504 meetings or otherwise, save that they told you plain and simple: "It is peanut free".
Am I correct? (no tone, just clarifying what I'm assuming, from what I'm "hearing")

Am I correct?
No.
The printed "calendar" is only one part of the "lunch program". There is also a large(r?) "a la carte" offering. Plus a third offering called, "The Snack Shack". All are operated through the same food provider that is administered by the Director of Food Services. The program at the Middle School is not and has never been "peanut free", and currently "may contain" items are served.
"Safety" issues are addressed on-going. . . by the 504 team. "Cafeteria Procedures" were developed 'prior to'. Procedures are discussed, reviewed, and revised during our 504 meetings with the DFS and myself in attendance, as well as the district administrator responsible for district 504 compliance and other 504 teams members. At one point at the very start of Mariah entering Middle School, PB sandwiches were part of the lunch program under specific written safety practices developed by the team. As a member of the 504 team, I was 'contacted prior' by my attendance at those many, many, many meetings.
Next the school counselor reviews the offerings with Mariah, explains what she may and may not have, and they (Mariah and counselor) devised a system in the cafeteria that identified 'may contain' items for her. Mariah meets periodically with the school counselor to review how the 504 is working. The school counselor brings that information to the 504 meetings. The school counselor is a cafeteria 'monitor' in addition to several others who have received training on the "Cafeteria Procedures'.
Then "Mariah received a hot lunch calendar". Just like everyone else.

I appreciate the clarity very much. Though I'm surprised at your summary of what you 'heard'.

It's unfortunate that you won't have the benefit of professional school staff assisting you (and other fellow parents) in a 'self analysis' type of discussion.
Again, I'm lucky.

Gail/MB -
Would you mind please taking your discussion to off-topics, or better yet, a private email exchange?
Thank you!

Hi Greenlady. Would you, Meg (the original thread starter) or anyone else like to 'switch channels' by (re)starting another thread?
I don't intend to be disrespectful. Most of what MB and I are discussing is school-related, so I'm comfortable staying here.

New question: I've found out that other schools in my town appear to be more accommodating. I would have to make an out of district request to move to another public school. According to the rumor mill, these requests aren't granted too frequently.
Experience anyone?
After re-reading this question, I think I'm clearer on what you'd like to ask of your school district -- is it to be granted a variance to send child to a different public school but still within the same "district" or public school system of your local area? -- I think my confusion (and maybe others' misinterpretaion) has to do with diiffering definition for school "district" state-to-state.
Hope I'm making sense?
Anyway, I mentioned in another thread somewhere -- last summer, when I was dealing with the city public school system here in my town & we discovered that the particular elementary school our son was zoned for would (surprisingly) NOT have full-time nurse afterall, the school system then offered to send him to another elementary school **within the same city system** but which WOULD have full-time nurse. In our case, the move-to-school was an unacceptable school for us and we declined. (Child ended up in private school.)
My point is, perhaps your district would prefer to have another PA child at same school where other(s) are and where similar PA accommodations are already in place & being practiced? I don't know exactly how you approach them about it, except to begin with complimentary things to say about certain school (your desired one) as to PA set-up they may have already in place & use the tack of ease for school system and perhaps less costly if all at same school?
Making any sense yet?
(Typing as fast as I can, but wanted to add this here after I re-read some last night & this AM on this thread. . . .)

I won the bet with hubby. (it's focused around "predictability" and the exact phraseology: "self analysis". I surprised even myself.
Just in case your wondering it was whether I was making tetrazini, or if he was grilling. Too bad he won't be able to pay up until tomorrow. I figured, even if I lost, it was the same as if I didn't bet at all. Like I said, I surprise even myself.
