Our 504 is in place this year(after months and months of negotiations over accommodations)....but I must say, things are looking pretty good this year!! I don't want to give details(althought I wish I could)....but snacks are controlled this year in the whole grade!! I took Jake in a box with a lid and stuffed it full of every possible snack he loves, that way whatever the class is eating(weather it goldfish, fruit chews, pretzels etc...) he can pull the same/safe thing from his box and feel just like the other kids in class! He is wearing his e-belt today. He had one buddy ask what it was(we practiced) so he said "it's my shot(I suggested using that word because kids hate shots and would probably then leave him alone!!)but "it's my shot and we can't touch it, or we'll get into trouble".....and the boy was fine with it, so so-far-so-good(knock on wood). And then at lunch, he is using the new desk....I caught a couple of his friends and told them to sit at the end of the lunch table(we have those rectangle ones with benches)....so they did, then I scooted his desk up to the end of the table(left about 8in gap)....so he got to sit next to his buddies and loved every minute of it!!! Our school still makes the cold lunch and pb&j Uncrustables sit all together at 2 other tables(at the other end) so no one near him will be eating pb...but they eventually will the egg sandwich, or sesame bun etc... so the gap will help keep *his eating space* clean(unlike at the pf table, kids would be sitting irght next to him(very closely too) with his other allergens). Then once he was doen the custodian came over and moved his desk back into a storage closet(so no one else will use it).
But I was very relieved how smoothly things went. Even the nurse was in the lunchroom for each lunch period today, guiding the allergic kids(mostly the new ones that had no clue) over to their safe seats and informing the cold lunch and pb eaters they had their own tables as well....it was so nice!!!! Hope others are doing as well, if you have time, share the first day. If you are running into problems already, maybe we can help brainstorm some ideas as well.
I also got my sons caprast results back, not good! His peanut is still 24.50(from 21.70...no change) then green bean was positive 3.19(class2) and sesame was 51.50(class5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Scary!!! HUGS

Hi Chanda,
Glad to hear that things are much improved compared to last year.
Sorry about the test results. I still don't get the whole RAST thing. Did the dr indicate why the numbers are increasing???
I didn't ask about the numbers, I consider the 24 and the 21 for peanut to be the same. The year before thought it went from 51 down to 21...so I guess class 4 is about where he'll stay probably. The green bean and sesame are all new just within the past month! I would imagine, with any *new* allergies that appear, there won't be much chance for outgrowing....but I am unsure.

Chanda, you sure worked long & hard on this. I am so glad to hear that it's going so much better.
And I DID notice your post elsewhere that mentioned the school providing the lunch desk. I did a happy-tap-dance on that one.
As to the sesame test results -- -- that sure does correlate with the sesame reaction this summer . . . will these test results help you in getting sesame buns changed to plain, perhaps?
The "glitter" demonstration sure would be good for sesame too . . . just a thought.

Glitter demonstration?
Yup. That's the idea. Anyone who's ever given glitter to a preschooler generally you just need to mention it.
Wooohoooo! Chanda, that is fantastic to hear!
(Let's hope that the entire year goes so smoothly, right?)
If you believe in Karma, the universe owes you a few big favors this year. {{hugs}}

Yup -- Sarah, do search on website for "glitter" and see if you get some of the different versions of this demonstration.
Just a great, illustrative, very visible way to show cross-contam & spread of food allergen.
Hoping to use this demo in next few weeks at our kids' school to help illustrate x-contam & peanut risks to non-PA folks & school staff. In our particular situation, we have some folks bucking the "handwash to enter classroom" rule -- so we hope this opens some eyes.
DOES FAAN HAVE THIS DEMO DETAILED ON THEIR WEBSITE????!!! HUH???!!! (mini-rant over)

The glitter deomonstration would be ideal...I would use it, but will wait for the perfect opportunity!!!
I checked on the sesame seed buns, it looks like they are only served with one particular sandwich(it comes pre-made and sealed, each kiddo opens and eats it) but the hamburger, chix sandwich(also coem pre-made(isn't anything made fresh anymore???)do have plain buns. I will ask about an alternate to the sesame seed bun, but just like the pb&j they serve once a week, I won't hold my breath! I do want to get jake his own folding chair though, today we pulled one over from the pf table...and the thought of a sesame seed laying in his seat freaked me out(it wasn't, but could easily happen) so I think I will buy a chair.
But I just emailed the teacher to thank her, and pass thanks onto the principal, nurse, custodian and lunch staff...all were present in the lunchroom today, and his day seems to have gone really well!!
I am a bit worried though, he is still really nervous in the lunchroom and got upset and kept begging me to make sure I eat lunch with him EVERY day! I will go as often as I can, but with 2 little ones tagging along(and not behaving very well) I know I can't do it EVERY day....which upsets him. I asked if he'd rather just come home and eat with me, he did say *no* but got upset and begged me to come to lunch again....that breaks my heart.

I'm glad your hard work (blood, sweat AND tears) paid off. Good for Jake!
Yikes about sesame. I didn't dream that it would come in so high.
Chanda-You (AND JAKE, especially) deserve a great year at school. I hope everyone is keeping their middle fingers down when their hands are facing you I think you have made so many +++ changes for your school and community. Fairly rapid progress considering the attitudes last year.
I'm sorry Jake's sesame # came back so high.
Thanks PP...the group of women that really wanted to *let me have it* last year...are still the same group, just with less support. I saw a few of them in the hall yesterday, same looks of sheer hatred, so nothing changed there. But they are the least of my worries, everything else has been such a positive change, that's what I focus my attention on now....I can get flipped off a million times, as long as the 504 is doing what it should(which it is), all is good!!!!
How are things in your district so far?? Hope your meeting went well, I hope the district does for you what they are now doing for us!!! HUGS
