I've just received an email back from Clabber Girl (Rumford Baking Powder), a company that manufactures baking powder, cornstarch, etc... They seem to have a very intensive peanut free policy http://www.clabbergirl.com/PeanutAllergies.php, however, they go on to mention in there email that "Our facility is currently not tree nut free, however, we are currently building a new manufacturing and warehouse facility that will be a pharmaceutical grade food processing plant designed to segregate allergen ingredients, such as gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, and soy. This will give Clabber Girl the ability to comply with the growing demand for nutrition and ingredient labeling regulated by the FDA. This new facility will be finished in mid-2007." Does anyone know if Argo Cornstarch Safe to use?

I have been using the Rumford Baking powder for my PA/TNA daughter- no warning on the label- but now that I know that there are tree nuts in the facility don't know that I want to use this anymore. Guess I'll have to see if there is a better alternative for PA/TNA. I haven't tried the corn starch- sorry I can't help you there- but thanks for posting this information!
I have used both products for 3 years now without any problems for my DD.

The facility may not be totally nut free, but that doesn't mean that there aren't dedicated lines for certain products. Here is an email I received (although it is an old email):
Dear Ms. xxxxxx,
Rumford Baking Powder is peanut free. Our equipment is not used to
process any products containing peanuts or tree nuts.
Because of the growing concern over peanut allergies, our facility will
be officially declared peanut free as of July 1st of this year. We
believe that we are the first manufacturer in the United States to make
this claim.
For several months we have had policies in effect to ensure our
employees don't contribute to cross-contamination by bringing in peanut
or nut foods for lunch, etc.
I hope this information helps you.

Here is the exact email I received this week from Pamela Meeks. Clabber Girl could have processes in place for tree nuts, but you would like they would have stated that in the email if they were comfortable with their practices. I guess this is just one of the comfort zone areas. T
Dear XXXXX,
Clabber Girl is a Peanut-Free facility, and I am sending you a link to our website that lists our peanut-free policy as well as testing procedures. http://www.clabbergirl.com/PeanutAllergies.php This Peanut-Free Policy applies to all our products, including Delisheries Baking Mixes.
I am also sending you our gluten-free statement, as it relates to our baking powders. Our facility is currently not tree nut free, however, we are currently building a new manufacturing and warehouse facility that will be a pharmaceutical grade food processing plant designed to segregate allergen ingredients, such as gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, and soy. This will give Clabber Girl the ability to comply with the growing demand for nutrition and ingredient labeling regulated by the FDA. This new facility will be finished in mid-2007.
I hope this information has been helpful, and if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us again.

Gluten Statement
Baking powder manufactured by Clabber Girl Corporation contains no wheat gluten. Products containing wheat are manufactured in the same facility, but are segregated from baking powder. The baking powder is periodically tested by a third party to ensure that it is gluten free.

I just emailed Clabber Girl again asking for further clarification on the tree nut ingredients. I will post my response as soon as I hear back.
Well, your email is more recent than mine. Maybe some things have changed, I don't know.
You are right though about comfort zones. Some people need the facility to be nut free. I understand that. For our dd, we try to get things that have dedicated lines whenever possible.
I'm very interested in hearing what they say to you about the tree nuts. My dd is TNA and PA and I just promised to bring some ingredients into school because they are baking.
Thanks for following up with them.
My son is PA/TNA and he has used both Clabber and Rumford for years w/o a problem. He has also played with Argo cornstarch. We use to make oobleck a lot and playdoh...but he has never ingested it. However, he is contact sensitive to peanuts and I suspect to nuts. We never had a problem with the cornstarch he played with...not sure if that helps you at all.
we use argo cornstarch. when i spoke with them a few months ago they assured me they were nut free.
we also use rumford baking powder...does it sound like the new 2007 facility will have peanuts in it -- just segregated, or am i reading this incorrectly?
Good Question. It does kind of make you wonder. Maybe they are just stating what the machinery can do, not necessarily that they will need to screen for those items.
I'm still yet to hear back on the conrnstarch clarification on cross contamination. They must be looking into this a little more intensly.
