It’s easy to make vegan pancakes from scratch.

There are many different ways to make vegan pancakes, even if you do not have years of cooking experience. They are a great substitute for regular pancakes for people who are allergic to eggs, or for those who have chosen not to eat animal products, including eggs.

You can also make gluten-free vegan pancakes if you or someone in your family has celiac disease or a wheat allergy. Making these two types of pancakes is almost exactly like making regular pancakes except that you omit the eggs. Gluten-free vegan pancakes are made with a different type of flour.

Ingredients that you will need

Most recipes for vegan pancakes require all-purpose flour and either soy milk or rice milk. You will also need non-stick vegetable spray or some type of vegetable oil to put in the skillet so that the delicate pancakes do not stick to the bottom. You can also add fruit such as blueberries, bananas or strawberries, or chocolate chips to the pancakes as they are cooking.

Place your skillet on the stove to preheat

Your skillet can preheat on the stove while you mix your pancake batter together. If you are not an experienced cook, it is safer to mix the batter and then preheat your skillet on medium high. Oil will burn if it is left on the stove, and non-stick spray will turn brown and will not look appealing when you make your pancakes in it. Another option is to use no oil, but you will need a skillet that cooks foods without sticking.

Prepare the batter for your vegan pancakes

Mix 1 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of soy milk or rice milk with a wooden spoon in a medium-size bowl. There will be lumps in it, but that’s okay. Do not mix the batter any more once the two ingredients are blended together. Too much mixing can result in a “tough” texture to your pancakes. If you plan to add fruit or chocolate chips, now is the time to do this.

Cook the pancakes in the skillet

Place the amount of batter in the skillet to make the size pancakes that you prefer. For one large pancake, you will need about one-fourth of a cup. Gently spread the batter on the top of the pancake as it begins to cook. When it is beginning to get firm and golden brown on the edges, flip the pancake to the other side and cook thoroughly. A small skillet will cook one pancake at a time, or you can make two or three smaller pancakes in a larger skillet. Continue frying the batter until you have made vegan pancakes with all of the batter. It takes about 15 minutes to prepare the batter and make these pancakes.

Other options for vegan pancakes

Rather than putting fruit or chocolate chips into the batter, you may want to cook your pancakes plain. Then, add fruit or chocolate chips on top of a stack of cooked pancakes. Maple syrup is a favorite of many people and it tastes great with vegan pancakes. To make gluten-free vegan pancakes, simply substitute rice flour or gluten-free flour for regular flour. For thin pancakes, add more soy milk or rice milk so that the batter is the consistency of a thick soup.
