Actor Julie Bowen (Modern Family) has a son with a severe peanut allergy and is the spokesperson for the Raise Your Hand for Anaphylaxis Awareness competition as part of the Mylan Specialty Get Schooled in Anaphylaxis initiative.

The competition calls for local communities to educate others in the school environment in recognizing a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and prepare to respond when it occurs. Winning school districts were chosen from more than 830 schools across all 50 states.

Raising allergy awareness

Four school districts were chosen as winners and awarded a $15,000 educational grant from the foundation. These were:

  • Cheektowaga-Sloan Union Free School District (Cheektowaga, N.Y.)
  • Oxford Township School District (Oxford, N.J.)
  • Utica Community Schools (Sterling Heights, Mich.)
  • Ossining Union Free School District (Ossining, N.Y.)

Between them, the 830 school districts involved in the campaign this year raised nearly 150,000 “hands” in awareness. The top district, Cheektowaga-Sloan, raised more than 38,000 of those hands alone.

“Seeing all the hands raised made me realize how many people there are across the country, like me, who want to make sure everyone in the school community continues to talk about this issue,” said Bowen. “We all have our own reasons for raising awareness whether it’s for you, your child or someone else you are responsible for with a life-threatening allergy.”
