Pollen food allergy syndrome common in adults

by admin in Food Allergy News0 Comments

Pollen food allergy syndrome, or oral allergy syndrome, is a common allergy in adults.

This is an allergy marked by an itchy or irritated mouth, lips and throat after eating some raw fruits and vegetables. The symptoms are usually found in those who have been longtime sufferers of pollen allergies.

Syndrome not a food allergy

Most often, the symptoms are worse during or shortly after the related pollen season the person suffers in. The allergy is usually not manifested when the foods are cooked.

The allergies are not to the fruits and vegetables themselves, but to the pollen that may be on or in the foods due to their proximity to the plants from which the pollen is emitted.

Dr. Hemant Sharma at detailed this in a Q&A with a reader.
